Yenching Academy Scholarship 2027: Fully Funded Master’s at Peking University

The Yenching Academy of Peking University is accepting applications for its 2027 cohort of Yenching Scholars. The programme offers an interdisciplinary master’s degree focused on China Studies and brings together students from around the world for study in Beijing.

For Kenyan applicants interested in international relations, economics, public policy, history, law, business, culture, media or development, Yenching can be a relevant option because applicants from any undergraduate discipline may be considered if they can demonstrate a serious academic interest in China.

2027 application deadline

The official Yenching Academy admissions page states that international applications for the 2027 cohort opened on 1 September 2026 and close on 30 November 2026 at 9:00 a.m. Beijing time.

What the fellowship covers

Yenching Academy states that all scholars receive a generous fellowship package covering tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend, one round-trip travel fare and approved field-study costs.

This makes Yenching a comprehensive graduate funding options in China. Applicants should still budget for personal expenses that may fall outside the fellowship package.

Who can apply?

Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree, or be enrolled in a bachelor’s programme and expect to graduate by August of the intended enrolment year. The Academy also looks for strong academic performance, leadership potential, social responsibility and a genuine interest in interdisciplinary study of China.

English-language requirements

The official page currently lists IELTS Academic 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100 and Cambridge English 185 among accepted tests. International applicants who are native English speakers or who completed an English-taught undergraduate or postgraduate degree may be exempt under the published rules.

Required application materials

  • Completed online application form
  • Personal statement of up to 750 words
  • Statement of Research Interest of up to 1,500 words excluding citations
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Official academic transcripts
  • Degree certificate or enrolment certificate
  • Two academic recommendation letters
  • English-language evidence where required

Important referee rule

Yenching’s admissions page states that academic recommendation letters must come from full or associate professors, or equivalent academic ranks, and should be submitted by professors in the applicant’s intended field of study.

This requirement means applicants should approach potential referees early. A strong professional supervisor may know you well, but may not satisfy the programme’s academic referee requirement.

Considerations for Kenyan applicants

A good application should connect China Studies to a concrete academic or professional question. Kenyan applicants could build this connection around China-Africa trade, infrastructure, digital technology, media, diplomacy, manufacturing, education, cultural relations or development finance.

A weak statement says: “China is an important global country.” A stronger statement identifies a specific question, explains what the applicant has already studied or observed, and shows why Peking University is the right environment to investigate it further.

How to approach the research-interest statement

The research statement does not need to be a final thesis proposal, but it should demonstrate that you can think academically. Define a focused question, explain why it matters, mention relevant concepts or evidence and show awareness of the broader literature or policy context.

Application checklist

  • Confirm your bachelor’s completion timeline.
  • Identify two eligible academic referees.
  • Prepare your transcript and degree documents.
  • Check English-test validity if you need to submit scores.
  • Draft the personal statement and research statement separately.
  • Convert the deadline from Beijing time to your local time.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a generic “study in China” essay.
  • Using referees who do not meet the programme’s academic-rank requirements.
  • Treating the research statement as another personal statement.
  • Failing to explain why your proposed topic requires China-focused graduate study.
  • Waiting until the final day to arrange direct test-score delivery.

Career relevance

Graduates can move into diplomacy, international organisations, policy, research, business, journalism, consulting, development and China-related roles in both public and private sectors.

What applicants should know

Yenching is especially attractive for Kenyan applicants who can connect a strong academic profile with evidence of leadership and a credible China-related research interest. Applicants do not need a Chinese Studies bachelor’s degree, but they do need to show why the programme fits their intellectual direction.

Deadline: 30 November 2026, 9:00 a.m. Beijing time.

How to choose a Yenching research direction

Applicants should avoid trying to cover all of China in one proposal. A better approach is to choose a focused theme and explain why it matters. For example, a Kenyan applicant could examine digital trade between China and Africa, media representation, transport investment, public diplomacy, health cooperation or educational exchange.

How to prepare for the interview stage

If shortlisted, be prepared to explain your research interests in plain language, defend why Peking University is the right environment, and discuss leadership experiences without exaggeration. Strong interview answers should connect past evidence with future goals rather than repeating the written application word for word.

Practical timeline

October should be used to finalise academic references and English-test arrangements where required. Early November is ideal for refining the personal statement and research-interest statement. The final two weeks should be reserved for proofreading, checking direct score delivery and confirming referee submissions.
